Uganda has been on our radar for a long time, and we have tried sources from a few origins but have not yet found any spectacular Ugandan coffee. Our friend Nas, who is working with Falcon Coffee, shared their story with local producer The Coffee Garden in Uganda, which is partnering with Falcon to produce specialty coffee.
Our focus has always been sourcing, roasting, and offering ethically sourced coffee. This particular lot produced by The Coffee Garden came from the small village of Zebigi in Bukyabo, Sironko district. The village is located slightly on the upper mountain from their washing station.
This is our third offering, The Coffee Garden, and we could not be more delighted by the meticulous work carried out by their team. This coffee went through 40 hours of washed fermentation, which gave it a clean and well-balanced taste profile. It also went through 12 different processing stages before being exported to the customer.
Uganda Zebigi reminds us of fully-washed Yirgacheffe coffee. The quality remains untouchable even at medium roast. With a more developed roast profile, it has an intense floral quality like geranium and a floral aftertaste. The black tea sweetness and sage taste are signatures of clean, fully washed African coffee. This coffee has unlocked the new perception of Ugandan coffee, it is no longer an underdog coffee.
The stories begin when Dana, who just set up her shop in Prague, looks into sourcing coffee directly from origin. Together with her partner Michael and friend Michael, they begin looking into sourcing coffee from Uganda since Michael is from there too.
To their surprise, Uganda is still lacking in development for specialty coffee businesses, which led them to start a new initiative to improve Ugandan coffee quality. Together with Falcon, they started The Coffee Gardens, which is not only buying local coffee but also helping and supporting smallholder farmers in improving their coffee quality for a better price.
