We have been eyeing quite long time to get our hand on Volcan Azul coffee. This farm has been producing some of the best Costa Rica coffee that we ever taste. Located on the slopes of Barva and Poas Valcano in Centraland West Valley in Saint Region, Volcan Azul has the fertile soil to grow coffee. Volcan Azul itself is the most exciting farm managed by Alejo Castro where limited selection of exclusive micro and nano batches of exotic coffee varietal has been grown. Such as Caturra, Geisha, SL-28, Villa Sarchi, Sarchimor and Mocca. Each coffee come in different process presentation like washed, honey or natural.
Another gem from Alejo farm, Obata coffee varietal!. For coffee roaster like Arkib we always celebrate unfamiliar coffee varietal like Obata. This coffee is a hybrid between Villa Sarchi and Timor Hybrid coffee varietal. It was developed in Brazil and introduced to Costa Rica around 2014. When it comes to strictly hard bean SHB coffee, i have love hate relationship with Costa Rica and Guatemala coffee. It is super dense and sometime the roasting profile is out of my comfort zone. This particular coffee surprisingly is pretty easy to roast. Moderate heat with proper roasting time, I able to bring out more prominent good flavors from Alejo Obata coffee. I'm really surprised with notes of black berry and chomile. It tastes intense berries but with thick tea texture. The sweetness of palm sugar taste so delicious when it totally cools down. I'm pretty happy with this natural Costa Rica coffee. Alejo Castro coffee really up to his reputation as COE winner farmer. Kudos!
