Nicaragua has always been an underrated coffee producer. Mainly known for the commercial coffee market, most of Nicargua's coffee production still relies on local community coffee traders or cooperatives to get it sold abroad.
It is breathtaking to see efforts like the Nicaragua Cup of Excellence competition that give a platform for a small producer like El Avion to penetrate the international market. The latest release, Carbonic Maceration from El Avion opens eyes to the potential of Nicaraguan specialty coffee.
Mario Jose Gonzalez, owner of El Avian Farm, was born into the illusion of producing the best specialty in Nicaragua. The farm was started in 2012, mainly focusing on growing varieties of red catuai and catimor. El Avion is located at 1400 to 1800 m, which is considered high for Nicaragua's geography. With its strategic location and elevation, Mario decided to solely focus on growing specialty coffee.
His decision and commitment paid off when he won No. 1 in the 2022 Nicaraguan Cup of Excellence competition. This is such a major recognition for a small producer like him who dedicated his life and passion to producing the best coffee from Nicaragua. This is such an exciting time to offer one of his experimental lots of coffee that showcases the diversity of flavours produced by top-notch Nicaraguan producers.
