Harmony Nutty

For any coffee roastery, sourcing beans from Brazil feels almost like a rite of passage. With its signature chocolatey and nutty richness, Brazilian coffee has long been a crowd favorite among coffee lovers worldwide. Cocatrel has masterfully captured this beloved profile by blending coffees from Carmo de Cachoeira an origin renowned for its classic low-acidity and deep, nutty characteristics.

Enter Caixa de Frutas or "Box of Fruits"—Cocatrel’s latest regional blend that brings a fresh twist to Brazilian coffee. Roasted slightly lighter to highlight its refined complexity, this coffee delivers a clean, well-balanced cup. Expect gentle acidity with rounded starfruit-like fruitiness, a subtle touch of apple cider, sweet hazelnut, hints of mango, and a light syrupy texture.

Approachable and effortlessly enjoyable, Caixa de Frutas is the perfect entry point for filter coffee beginners. Its smooth, forgiving nature makes brewing easy while still offering depth for seasoned drinkers. Every now and then, we love showcasing a coffee that bridges the gap between commercial and specialty coffee and this blend does just that.

The Producer

Nestled in the coffee-rich landscapes of Três Pontas, the Cocatrel Cooperative has been shaping Brazil’s coffee scene since 1961. Today, it stands as the country’s second-largest cooperative, uniting over 6,000 producers across 11 buying stations. With cutting-edge traceability, each coffee delivery is tagged with a unique QR code, ensuring farmers can track their beans with precision. Notably, more than half of Cocatrel’s members cultivate coffee on small farms under 10 hectares, emphasizing a commitment to small-scale producers.

One of Cocatrel’s standout offerings is Caixa de Frutas—meaning "Box of Fruits"—a carefully curated blend sourced primarily from Carmo de Cachoeira. Selected by the Cocatrel Direct Lab for its vibrant red fruit notes and creamy milk chocolate finish, every batch must achieve a clean, high-scoring profile of 83+ on the cupping scale.

What sets this coffee apart is its unique drying process. Instead of traditional patio drying, the cherries are placed in static boxes—1-meter-deep containers holding up to 15,000 liters of fruit. These innovative boxes circulate air from below, ensuring a controlled drying environment with temperatures never exceeding 40°C. Unlike conventional methods, the coffee remains untouched throughout drying, enhancing its fruit-forward character. After a 1-2 week resting period, the beans are milled, unlocking a distinctly vibrant and expressive profile—pushing Brazilian coffee beyond its classic natural flavors.
