The Odds

Against belief and odds, Empayer Hitam breaks free from the conventions of third-wave coffee. It stands as a symbol of our playful rebellion in portraying specialty coffee. Dark roast often gets a bad reputation as bitter, ashy or harsh, but we rewrite the story. Our guideline is simple, a dark roast can be bold and fruity at the same time.

Blending three washed Ethiopian coffees feels like crafting a potion. Fruity acidity gently cuts through the darkness creating a smooth and bold cup perfect for Malaysia’s blazing weather. Even at a more developed roast, fresh citrus notes linger like guava while roselle adds subtle floral fragrance. Bitter cacao balances sweetness with precision.

With milk, Empayer Hitam transforms again revealing deep vanilla, white Nutella and buttercream textures. Every sip is endlessly enjoyable, a dark roast that keeps its soul and surprises with each layer. This is the kind of coffee we love to roast.

The Story

Empayer Hitam is one of the earliest blends in our archive. It started with a request from our friend Sani for a coffee made for pure black iced drinks. We imagined the Japanese way of enjoying coffee, ice-cold, smoky, fruity and smooth.

As a specialty roaster we challenged ourselves to explore dark roasts without losing the origin’s character. Choosing the right single-origin beans was key to creating harmony and clarity while honouring complexity.

Empayer Hitam is more than a black coffee. It marks our exploration and celebrates the layers and generations of coffee drinker as we continue to uncover.
