Gama Ray

Biftu Gudina stands among the celebrated names in Ethiopia’s specialty coffee scene, known for its mastery in washed processing. Each harvest carries refined brightness with delicate citrus tones and soft floral clarity. It is the kind of coffee that captures quiet attention on the cupping table and expresses balance and purity that feel unmistakably Ethiopian.

Under the Kata Muduga Union, exceptional lots are carefully separated and profiled to allow traceability down to individual producers and micro regions. This thoughtful system recognises quality while ensuring producers receive fair value for their work. Each lot tells a story of place and care that reflects both the land and the people behind it.

This year Lot 8 Gamabuta found its way to us, a coffee that feels soft, elegant and effortlessly charming. The cup shows a graceful balance of citrus and tropical fruit with gentle notes of rose water and cantaloupe. As it cools a black tea sweetness unfolds with chrysanthemum, red peach and lime candy. Gamabuta stands as a quiet pinnacle of classic washed Ethiopian coffee.

The Producer

Kata Muduga Union was founded in 2016 in the highlands of Jimma, uniting smallholder farmers from Goma, Gera, Gumai, Setema and Sigimo. These highland communities sit between 1,800 and 2,300 meters above sea level, where cool air and fertile red soil nurture coffee of remarkable clarity. Here, the rhythm of daily life moves with the land, patient, grounded and deeply tied to its surroundings. Kata Muduga was formed to give these farmers a stronger voice and bring their coffee to the global stage with fairness and respect.

More than a cooperative, Kata Muduga is a bridge between heritage and modern craft. It offers access to shared washing stations, training and quality control, helping farmers refine their process while preserving the character of their heirloom varietals. Within this union are celebrated names like Biftu Gudina, Nano Challa and Duromina, each contributing to a legacy of craftsmanship and collaboration rooted in the hills of Jimma.

Every harvest is handled with care and attention. Exceptional lots are separated, traced and recognized for their individuality, allowing producers to earn fairer rewards. Through this simple yet thoughtful structure, Kata Muduga has become a quiet force in Ethiopian coffee, a collective defined by honesty, precision and a deep respect for origin.
