Da Q

Uraga, in Ethiopia’s Guji region, has long held a reputation for producing intricate, high-quality coffees. This year we’re excited to share two exceptional lots from Nigusse Nare, a smallholder farmer whose dedication is woven into every part of his farm. Working tirelessly, he integrates organic practices and shade-grown coffee to craft beans that truly reflect the terroir. His commitment to quality has earned him a place among Ethiopia’s specialty coffee elite, recognized as one of the 2021 Ethiopia COE Winners, a testament to both his craft and the exceptional potential of Uraga’s highlands.

Nigusse Nare Lot Q is a precise microlot from the highlands of Ethiopia, a coffee that quietly carries the story of its origin. Each cherry is carefully hand-picked and naturally dried on raised beds, reflecting the farm’s altitude, fertile soil, and shade-grown environment. The “Q” signals meticulous assessment by a licensed Q Grader, a guarantee of the cup’s refined sweetness, clarity, and layered depth.

Nigusse Nare Lot Q is a coffee that speaks in layers. On espresso it bursts with a lively citrus brightness unfolding into the vibrant sweetness of mulberry, apricot, and guava, each sip offering a playful tension between fruit and acidity. Beneath it a refined floral note of chrysanthemum lingers intertwined with the warm golden sweetness of honeycomb. When milk softens the cup the experience shifts, velvety and gentle, reminiscent of freshly made pancakes with whispers of watermelon and blueberry weaving through each mouthful. Lot Q is more than a coffee, it is a carefully crafted journey of flavorus, a true example of what specialty coffee at its finest should be.

The Producer

Located in the misty highlands of Uraga in Ethiopia’s Guji Zone, Nigusse Nare tends six hectares of coffee with care shaped by generations. His farm sits at around 2,100 meters, where native trees provide gentle shade over the plants, nurturing both soil and crop. Using traditional organic methods, Nigusse cultivates local heirloom varieties, blending heritage with a deep understanding of the land. Each day is guided by patience and rhythm, with compost, mulch, and meticulous care shaping every cherry he harvests.

Coffee is more than a crop it is a family legacy. Nigusse’s ancestors have farmed in the Guji highlands for decades, relying on the land for both sustenance and income. Today, he continues this tradition alongside his wife and children, weaving labor, heritage, and care into each stage of cultivation. The farm thrives through careful pruning, composting, and selective harvesting, while local agronomists and exporter partners guide him in separating small lots to improve quality and traceability, elevating the coffee’s expression

Life as a smallholder in Guji is never simple. Unpredictable weather, limited infrastructure and rising costs test resilience, yet Nigusse remains committed to refining his farm and his coffee. His journey embodies the quiet strength of Ethiopia’s smallholder producers, families living in remote high-altitude regions, forming the backbone of the country’s coffee industry, and proving that dedication, patience and love for the land can transform each cherry into a story in the cup
