Hello Jack!

Indonesia’s coffee story unfolds across thousands of islands, each shaped by its own sense of place. East Nusa Tenggara, on the island of Flores, stands quietly apart. Located on Indonesia’s eastern edge, Flores remains largely untouched by urbanisation. Its open landscapes, high elevation, and steady climate create ideal conditions for growing Arabica coffee, resulting in flavours that reflect the land with clarity.

Tuang Coffee has played a key role in unlocking the potential of Flores coffee. Driven by a group of young producers, they introduced experimental processing methods previously unseen in the region, including anaerobic fermentation. Through careful cherry selection and a strict focus on ripeness, they have elevated both quality and consistency, reshaping how Flores coffee is understood.

This year, we return with several lots from Gulang Village, including a standout lot that underwent 144 hours of natural anaerobic fermentation. On filter, the cup presents fragrant bubblegum and delicate winter melon notes. As espresso, it delivers tropical longan alongside bright grape and pomegranate fruitiness. As the cup cools, hints of herbal dill and tart prune emerge. With milk, dried jackfruit and Van Houten style chocolate come forward. Lot 2817 is a defining expression of Gulang coffee, crafted for true coffee connoisseurs.

The Producer

Tuang Coffee carry out slogan that coffee is more than just a bitter drink. It’s a journey from soil to sip, ever-evolving and full of potential. With a deep passion for learning, Tuang Coffee constantly explores the intricacies of coffee trees, soil, varieties, and fermentation methods to continually enhance the coffee experience. By challenging traditional perceptions, Tuang Coffee aims to transform coffee into a complex and flavourful product, showcasing its true nature as a fruit rather than just a commodity.

Tuang Coffee's journey begins in the fertile Manggarai region of Flores, Indonesia, where it partners with local farmers to create exceptional coffee. Through collaboration, Tuang Coffee provides the necessary processing infrastructure, alleviating farmers' worries about costs. This partnership allows farmers to elevate their coffee, which was once viewed as a simple, bitter product, into a refined, specialty offering. By working together, Tuang Coffee helps farmers unlock the hidden potential within every coffee cherry.

The coffee trees are organically grown at altitudes between 1,400–1,700 meters above sea level, surrounded by other crops such as taro, yam, and banana trees. Each coffee bean is carefully processed, with attention to its varietal, method, and the specific village of origin, ensuring that every batch is uniquely traceable. Through continued experimentation with fermentation processes, Tuang Coffee strives to refine its flavors, offering only the finest beans from Flores Manggarai. Every step is focused on sustainability, improving farmers' livelihoods, and embracing the endless possibilities within the world of coffee.
