Babadan Village

Central Java remains one of the lesser-charted landscapes in the specialty coffee world, yet its valleys hold immense promise. Among the voices leading this quiet revolution is Selosa Coffee, a young processor unearthing possibilities with conviction. This season, they worked hand in hand with farmer Slamet Wahyuni of Babadan village, bringing forth two remarkable coffees.

For this harvest, Selosa embraced a technique first popularised by Guzmán Elkin in Colombia, Hermetic Sealed Natural. Ripe red cherries are carefully handpicked and vacuum-packed for a 240-hour fermentation. Each day, built-up carbon dioxide is released before the vacuum is restored, ensuring stability throughout. The process unfolds in a cold-water bath at 14–19°C, slowing fermentation and unlocking a refined depth of flavour rarely found in Indonesian coffee.

The result is Surya Kusuma, a masterpiece that bridges imagination between Panama and Indonesia. As a filter, it glimmers with peach-like aromatics, lifted raspberry and blueberry acidity, and almond-smooth sweetness. In espresso, notes of black tea and blackcurrant meet a subtle black pepper finish, while milk transforms it into a rich chocolate syrup indulgence. Proof that boundaries, when pushed with intent, lead to extraordinary expressions in the cup.

The Producer

Since the very beginning, exploring the diverse landscapes of Indonesia has been at the heart of Arkib. In 2022, our journey led us to Central Java, where we began collaborating with Zahrul Huda of Selosa Coffee on small batch projects. His signature Black Lava black honey process was the first coffee we ever released from him, and it quickly won the admiration of many coffee lovers. Zahrul has always stood at the forefront, driven by a passion to elevate Central Java coffee onto the world stage.

This year, he works exclusively with the villages of Pluluhan and Babadan, crafting three complex lots that reflect the character of their origins. Babadan, resting on the slopes of volcanic mountains, offers fertile soil for arabica coffee. Under the care of farmer Slamet Wahyuni, and in partnership with Selosa Coffee, two stellar lots Surya Kusuma and Tirta Ranu came to life. Pluluhan, on the eastern side of Mount Lawu, is a fertile agricultural region where local smallholders are shaping a new chapter of coffee production.

Working with young visionaries like Selosa Coffee continues to remind us why Arkib stands firm in our pursuit of quality. Every roast carries the essence of our producers’ dedication, refined with our precision, and delivered as a cup of joy for those who seek the extraordinary.
