West Gem

Semendo is an often overlooked coffee-growing region. We first encountered its coffee through a friend in Jakarta during a Q-grade course. From there we met smallholder farmers in Semendo and were struck by what the region could offer. Compared to typical Sumatran coffees, Semendo shows a strong berry and dark fruit character, especially when processed naturally or with natural anaerobic methods.

Our search for 2022 led us to Yogi Kurniawan, a young processor with a deep passion for specialty coffee. He dedicates many hours to refining his craft, shaping each lot to bring out the finest expression of Semendo coffee. This year we sourcing exceptional natural anaerobic lot from Yogi’s coffee.

Yogi’s coffee represents the work of a new generation. The filter cup carries sweet notes of jackfruit and pineapple, balanced by stone fruits and green pear acidity for a delicate and inviting experience. In espresso, complex flavours of mangosteen, strawberry and blackberry emerge, while tropical notes like durian, pineapple and jackfruit become more pronounced on the second sip. With milk, the Semendo coffee opens into intriguing layers reminiscent of cempedak cake, brie cheese and durian crepe. The cup offers a refreshing, nuanced expression of fermented coffee with depth and layered flavours.

The Producer

Semendo coffee comes from the highlands of South Sumatra, where cool air and volcanic soils shape the land. Smallholder farms climb the steep hillsides between 900 and 1,400 meters, tending coffee with care and tradition. Processed mostly using the wet-hulled method, the beans develop a full body with earthy sweetness, hints of cocoa, warm spice, and a subtle herbal note. Semendo cups feel grounded and expressive, a quiet reflection of the region and the people who nurture it.

In our search for local producers, we connected with Yogi Kurniawan, born and raised in the region. He began as a small processor, buying cherries from nearby villages and working with traditional natural and washed methods. Together with Arkib, we shared insights and feedback to help refine his production. This year, Yogi took a bold step, exploring anaerobic processing and opening new possibilities in what nature can reveal through coffee.
