RED COMB

It has been some time since we last sourced coffee from Rwanda and this return feels especially rewarding. We are more than happy to bring Rwanda back into the Arkib lineup. Through our good friend Nas at Falcon Coffee we explored a wide selection at the cupping table and this year two lots stood out with quiet confidence. Both were selected from Nyungwe and Gatare washing stations and processed by Rwanda Trading Company whose work continues to set a high benchmark for quality in the country.

This particular coffee is notable for its natural process. Rwanda is traditionally known for washed coffees that prioritise clarity consistency and structure to meet commercial expectations. At Gatare the team chose a different path taking a measured risk to explore natural processing and unlock a new flavour expression of Rwanda. Ripe cherries are carefully selected then dried slowly on raised African beds staying true to classic methods while allowing character to develop with patience.

Gatare Lot 1171 shows a generous and expressive side at medium roast. On espresso the cup leans strongly toward red fruit character with layers of red dates ripe red fruits and a jammy sweetness. The finish carries a lingering assam boi note that keeps the profile lively and memorable. With milk the coffee opens into a softer and more rounded sweetness bringing out graham cracker honeycomb and almond tones. The finish shifts toward a gentle rooibos tea quality. A pink grapefruit undertone paired with a light caramel texture adds structure and lift making this natural Rwanda an exciting and versatile coffee to enjoy.

The Producer

Gatare is one of Rwanda’s most historic and respected names in specialty coffee rooted in the Gatare Washing Station in Nyamasheke District Western Province near Lake Kivu. Established in 2003 Gatare is widely recognised as Rwanda’s first modern washing station and has played a defining role in shaping the country’s reputation for clean and refined washed coffees. The station works with thousands of smallholder farmers cultivating coffee on surrounding hillsides at elevations of roughly 1600 to 2000 metres above sea level where fertile soils and cool lake influenced temperatures support slow and even cherry development.

Production focuses almost entirely on Red Bourbon which is carefully hand picked at peak ripeness and processed using a fully washed method that reflects Rwanda’s hallmark style. Cherries are selectively sorted before pulping fermentation and washing then dried slowly on raised African beds. Throughout the process close attention is given to lot separation and moisture control to ensure consistency and precision. This disciplined approach produces coffees known for their clarity balance and quiet elegance.

Gatare has earned international recognition through repeated appearances in Cup of Excellence competitions and has long been favoured by specialty roasters seeking a classic Rwandan profile. Today Gatare coffees are exported through long standing partners and remain a reference point for what washed coffee from Rwanda can express at its best.
