Subtle Nuance

It has been a while since Rwanda last appeared in the Arkib lineup and returning to it feels quietly satisfying. This season we revisited Rwanda through our long standing friend Nas at Falcon Coffee spending time at the cupping table and tasting widely without expectation. Among many good samples two lots stood out with calm assurance. Both come from the Nyungwe and Gatare washing stations and are processed by Rwanda Trading Company whose work continues to define consistency and clarity in Rwandan coffee.

This Nyungwe lot stays true to the classic expression of washed Rwanda. On filter the cup opens with a gentle chamomile fragrance followed by fresh Meyer lemon brightness. As the cup settles stone fruit character begins to emerge with red peach taking the lead. At lower temperatures cranberry notes become more apparent adding depth and a layered structure to the experience. The profile remains clean and composed throughout.

Nyungwe washed is a straightforward expression done with care. It delivers lively yet refined acidity balanced by a sense of harmony rather than intensity. A coffee that does not ask for attention but rewards it. Clear honest and confidently itself.

The Producer

Nyungwe is a specialty coffee grown by smallholder farmers in Nyamasheke District in Western Rwanda and delivered to the Nyungwe Washing Station operated by Rwanda Trading Company RTC. The station is located beside Nyungwe National Park one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests. This forest edge setting creates a cool and humid environment with high rainfall fertile soils and slow cherry maturation which strongly shapes the character of the coffee.

Coffee farming in Nyungwe is led by small scale producers who cultivate coffee on steep hillsides surrounding the forest. Farms are commonly shaded and intercropped and managed using traditional practices passed down through generations. RTC works closely with these farmers through training programs that focus on selective harvesting accurate delivery timing and quality based incentives. This approach improves consistency while maintaining clear traceability at the washing station level.

At the Nyungwe Washing Station cherries are processed using Rwanda’s classic fully washed method with careful control over fermentation washing and drying. RTC places strong emphasis on processing discipline and long term infrastructure investment allowing quality to remain stable year after year despite seasonal challenges. The result is a coffee that reflects its forest influenced terroir and Rwanda’s signature washed style clean structured and elegant.
