The Lake

It has been some time since we last sourced coffee from Rwanda and this return feels especially rewarding. We are more than happy to bring Rwanda back into the Arkib lineup. Through our good friend Nas at Falcon Coffee we explored a wide selection at the cupping table and this year two lots stood out with quiet confidence. Both were selected from Nyungwe and Gatare washing stations and processed by Rwanda Trading Company whose work continues to set a high benchmark for quality in the country.

Our latest release from the Inzovu Washing Station reflects the familiar character of Rwanda. The cup leans toward red fruits and soft crimson florals where hibiscus appears with gentle clarity. Its acidity carries a sweet citrus brightness reminiscent of a refreshing glass of lemon juice offering a comforting and lively sip. The texture is light and silky almost meringue-like in its delicacy. As the cup cools rhubarb notes slowly rise adding another layer of complexity. Balanced and expressive Inzovu feels naturally suited for a daily brew precise vibrant and quietly awakening the senses of a morning coffee ritual.

The Producer

Inzovu is a specialty coffee produced by the Rwanda Trading Company and named after the Inzovu Washing Station in Western Rwanda near the shores of Lake Kivu. In Kinyarwanda, Inzovu means “elephant,” a symbol of strength and presence. The name represents coffees sourced from selected smallholder farmers who deliver their cherries to this station, reflecting a collective effort behind each harvest.

The coffee is grown by hundreds of smallholder farmers at elevations between 1,600 and 1,900 meters above sea level, primarily planted with Red Bourbon, Rwanda’s most established and best-performing variety. The region’s high elevation, fertile volcanic soils, and temperate climate allow cherries to mature slowly, contributing to clarity and refinement in the cup.

Processing at Inzovu follows Rwanda’s classic fully washed method. Ripe cherries are hand-sorted before pulping, followed by controlled fermentation, careful washing, and slow drying on raised African beds. Guided by Rwanda Trading Company’s focus on farmer training, processing discipline, and lot separation, Inzovu reflects a continued commitment to producing elegant and consistent specialty coffees from Rwanda.
