The Producer
Gatare is one of Rwanda’s most historic and respected names in specialty coffee rooted in the Gatare Washing Station in Nyamasheke District Western Province near Lake Kivu. Established in 2003 Gatare is widely recognised as Rwanda’s first modern washing station and has played a defining role in shaping the country’s reputation for clean and refined washed coffees. The station works with thousands of smallholder farmers cultivating coffee on surrounding hillsides at elevations of roughly 1600 to 2000 metres above sea level where fertile soils and cool lake influenced temperatures support slow and even cherry development.
Production focuses almost entirely on Red Bourbon which is carefully hand picked at peak ripeness and processed using a fully washed method that reflects Rwanda’s hallmark style. Cherries are selectively sorted before pulping fermentation and washing then dried slowly on raised African beds. Throughout the process close attention is given to lot separation and moisture control to ensure consistency and precision. This disciplined approach produces coffees known for their clarity balance and quiet elegance.
Gatare has earned international recognition through repeated appearances in Cup of Excellence competitions and has long been favoured by specialty roasters seeking a classic Rwandan profile. Today Gatare coffees are exported through long standing partners and remain a reference point for what washed coffee from Rwanda can express at its best.
