Mekar

Direct trade gives us something beyond access to good coffee. It allows us to understand the people behind each harvest and follow the decisions that shape its quality. This is our fourth year working with Curtina Coffee. Each season brings a new reason to look forward to Kintamani. This harvest, we managed to secure four distinct micro lots from the region, each offering a different expression of Bali’s coffee landscape.

Wana, the mind behind Curtina Coffee, approaches coffee as a craft that never quite stands still. From refining farming practices to experimenting with processing methods and improving coffee grading, his work is driven by a quiet pursuit of better results. Before this harvest, he conducted a series of processing trials to ensure the honey process could be applied consistently at a larger scale. The result is a coffee that brings together ripe plum character and honey-like sweetness. It feels generous without being overwhelming, with a balance that makes this Bali harvest particularly rewarding.

We named this lot Kembang Rijasa, inspired by its wine-like character and the quiet beauty we associate with Balinese coffee. On the hand brew, bright gooseberry and orange acidity lead the way, followed by dried plum and a gentle shift towards Assam keping tea as the cup cools. Espresso brings the plum forward, layered with the sweet tang of mangosteen. Add milk and the winey character becomes more pronounced, carried by a rounded sweetness that recalls honey-coated cereal and Neslo, the familiar Malaysian blend of coffee and chocolate. It is a coffee that moves comfortably between delicate fruit and everyday indulgence, with each preparation revealing another side of Kintamani.

The Producer

The story of Arkib Coffee wouldn’t be complete without Bali coffee,it’s where our roasting journey began. Back in the day, the first beans we ever roasted were fully washed Bali coffee. Their vibrant flavours and the joy of the craft instantly hooked us, sparking a passion that turned into a career. From that moment, sourcing coffee directly from Bali became a dream we’ve chased ever since.

Our search led us to Curtina, a small coffee producer nestled in the Kintamani highlands. Founded by Wana Prastha, the son of Sang Kompyang who is a commercial coffee producer and processor, he has taken Bali coffee to new heights. Under Wana’s leadership, the team has pushed boundaries with experimental techniques like anaerobic and yeast processing, unlocking bold, unique flavours.

Unlike typical commercial operations, Curtina is dedicated to specialty coffee. Each batch is thoughtfully curated from multiple micro lots, using various fermentation and processing methods to showcase the beans’ best qualities. Thanks to this meticulous approach, Curtina has become one of the top direct producers we trust in delivering exceptional coffee every single time.
